ARTIST STATEMENT
In my paintings the landscape is a setting for ambiguous scenes in which the viewer is welcome to peer in, but keep their distance. The original location of my scenes are based on photographs of the large houses and public spaces around where I live, but once entering the realm of paint, they transform into places which may exist only in the imagination.
Shifts in perspective, multiple layering of different paintings and seductive swimming pools are used to create a potential dialogue between the viewer and the painted spaces. Some areas may seem ocean deep, while other architectural parts of the painting have no depth at all and appear only as a facade.
I aim to delve into the happenings and social narratives of these locations by treating the painting like a moment captured in a film still. Working in both a figurative and realist style, my paintings are approached like storybook illustrations to my own personal thoughts and emotions. These paintings exist in a recognisable and familiar present, yet still offer a sense of dislocation and awkwardness that keep the viewer guessing.
