Felicity Sivewright

My current art practice represents deeply felt journeys in paint developed over the past two years. It is an amalgamation of many things: personal record, emotional processing and a partial interpretation of landscape. The title of my solo exhibition 'THEN AND NOW' recognises the impact of time on the art making process and the fluid nature of personal response.

My process is more emotional than intellectual. The artworks are intuited responses to various life experiences. They're a way of thinking things through in a visual language. My intention is to capture the shape, depth and breadth of things at a given moment in time.

Although my approach is 'felt' rather than 'formal', design elements such as pattern, layering and repetition do emerge. There is a multi-dimensionality at work, and with the tensions between intentional and accidental enquiry comes movement and dynamism. I 'play' with the old and the new, with motifs and shapes, with opposing and complementary forces and with paint itself. There is intense activity in the pictorial field. 'Something' is always going on.

One of my primary concerns is about sharing feelings, not ideas. The result is a visual experience rather than intellectual dogma. Common themes and notions thread through my work, but my hope is that viewers can access their own interpretations of it, unhindered by the weight of heavily prescribed meaning.
