Di Cubitt

In my current art practice I am exploring the process of painting. Each step in such a process relies on and is a response to, the previous steps - making connections - and drawing together the threads to make the whole. The thoughts and ideas that feed and inform the process and my actions, gestures and marks are embeded in the layers that make up each painting.

The source material that I am drawing on and which is informing these processes, is my interest in what we see, what we overlook and how we perceive the world around us. At present, my focus is on the elemental forces of our world, such as the movement of wind, thermals and air pressure. These forces are felt rather than seen, but the marks left on the materials they come in contact with are a visible reminder of their existence. Water, in particular, has a special fascination for me. It provides the perfect surface for reflecting, in both a meditative and material sense. The constant movement whether gentle or not, presents to us a procession of ever-changing images and in the traces of its passage there are left the reminders of the unique patterns its force exerts on its surroundings.
