Catherine Swioklo
My work is essentially figurative and evolves from an emotional reaction to human experiences that often involve psychological drama. I create fragile porcelain figures that appear to ache with despair with the intent of evoking compassion or empathy from the viewer.
As a mixed media artist the collecting of materials is a major component of my work. I spend hours hunting for the right piece of weathered wood, the perfectly rusted piece of metal, that unusual piece of machinery that I can give new life and meaning to. I scour op shops, recycle centres, antique shops and tips enjoying the thrill of the chase, looking for the exact piece that will add history or memory to my work. The challenge of mixed media is that I never get bored. There is always some welding, wood working, clay building, sewing, drawing or painting that pushes my work forward.
Exhibitions
- September 14th - September 30th, 2011 - 'Shaping the Land' - David Small and
'Odyssey' - Catherine Swioklo
This is the joint solo exhibitions of David Small and Catherine Swioklo. David Small has created a quietly powerful examination of the land that is simultaneously luminous and reflective using a variety of media including charcoal, coloured pencils, pastels and oils.
Catherine Swioklo’s ‘Odyssey’ is an exhibition of small, porcelain and mixed media sculptures that explore the theme of displacement and the human condition, a recurring theme in her work. The figures are in a state of exodus, survival mode or transience with the material inferring fragility and impermanence and are representative of our own journey through life.
