Ben Sherar
Painting solely in oils on my own hand stretched and prepared canvases (for me this initial preparation of the work surface is just as important as the actual painting of the piece), my work primarily focuses on creating as realistic a representation as possible of places around me, places which hold special memories or meanings to others who know them.
Whilst endeavoring to portray the subject truly, but with a painterly aspect, I aim to engage the viewer and allow them to ascribe their own memories and emotions to the work.
Although I have previously painted landscape views of Perth locations, my newer figurative work portrays both unknown human subjects engaged in daily activities and seemingly random objects such as abandoned shopping trolleys, close-up depictions of toy rubber ducks and light poles glowing in deserted urban nightscapes.
With an intense focus on the subject and attention to detail I hope my new work gives a different, strangely disquieting view of scenes we witness every day.
